What Focal Length Is Fisheye?

Fisheye lenses are designed to produce abstract and dynamic images which make them perfect for wide-angle photography. Basically there are two types of fisheye lenses.

What focal length is fisheye?. Circular fisheye design at the wide end of the zoom range transitions to full-frame coverage by the long end of focal length range. A fisheye lens with a focal point starting at 16mm will have an image angle of about 100 degrees. Values for rectilinear lenses.

Its focal length varies between 17mm and 25mm depending on who you ask and who you examine. Fisheye lenses are generally only found at the shortest focal lengths typically less than 15mm and create an almost circular image with a field of view that can reach 180 degrees. Please note this is a table of rectilinear values ie.

At 7-16 mm these lenses go very wide and produce circular or ovular images that bend and distort at the edges. All fisheye lenses are not the same. We have an approximate field of view of over 180.

This is because the square root of 14 is 118. Objects appear less magnified in the film view compared to our naked eye perception. A fisheye lens presents a very distorted extremely wide angle of view.

A 35mm lens will be slightly wide-angle 24mm quite a bit wide-angle and 15mm would be extremely wide-angle. A lens with a focal point ranging from 75 to 15mm is also called a fisheye lens. This is different from the 90 angle of view from a lens which is down to the fact that we have two eyes.

Hopefully the table is quite self-explanatory but lets say you are looking for the Field-of-view of a 50mm lens mounted on an FX body. The short version is at the same focal length the mm number a fisheye lens should offer roughly the same field of view as the same focal length from a traditional wide-angle lens. The focal length of the fisheye refers to the center of the projection where it can be directly compared to a rectilinear lens.

Normally the angle of view of fisheye lenses is between 100 degrees and 180 degrees while the exact focal length depends on the format in use. With the 14X screw-on adapter our effective focal length will be 118mm. Unique fisheye zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs and can also be used on DX models where it provides a 12-225mm equivalent focal length range.

Different Types of Fisheye Lens. At the corners focal length does not mean much since a rectilinear lens would have to have a null focal length to shoot a 180-degree picture. Fisheye lens and focal lens.

For full frame cameras a typical circular fisheye lens might have a focal length of 8mm to 10mm. Full-frame lenses have slightly longer focal lengths usually 15mm to 16mm. Mass-produced fisheye lenses for photography first appeared in the early 1960s and are generally used for their unique distorted appearance.

In this case the distance between the sensor and the center of the lens also called the focal length is very short. To help guide your focal length discovery heres a list of common lenses their corresponding focal lengths and what sort of photography they might be best suited for. FOV equidistance fisheye frame sizefocal length573 the 573 is to convert from radians to degrees.

Almost all other fisheye lenses are what is called an equidistant projection the Samyang uses a stereographic projection. Fisheye field of view is a different beast. The 12mm focal length.

There are a number of mathematical formulae that describe how the wide angle scene in front of you is mapped to the flat surface of the camera sensor. FOV equisolid fisheye 4 arcsin frame sizefocal length 4 Also popular is the equidistance projection and for the the field of view is given by. This may seem perfectly plausible.

As with all lenses the focal length is effectively increased for cameras with a cropped sensor. A fisheye lens also called a curvilinear lens embraces barrel distortion and turns it from a flaw into a feature. Full-frame lenses have slightly longer focal lengths usually 15mm to 16mm.

Lenses below this focal length do indeed give us a wider angle of view. However with a 349 mm effective diameter front meniscus over 137 inches weighting over 11 kg 24 lb. Michael The 8-15mm Fisheye is a zoom lens It can only be at a single focal length between 8mm and 15mm at any given time depending on the position of the various lens elements based on the position of the zoom ring.

For the popular 35 mm film format typical focal lengths of fisheye lenses are between 8 mm and 10 mm for circular images and 1516 mm for full-frame images. The area that we actively perceive is smaller similar to a 40-50mm lens. How to use the table.

Now with a focal length of 10 mm this lens would cover exactly the full-size 24 x 36 mm frame. If we use 2 instead of 14 it figures out to 1189mm or 119mm The same holds true with screw-on wide angle adapters. For cameras with a 35mm sensor or film a typical circular fisheye lens might have a focal length of 8mm to 10mm.
